This article is believed to be the origin of the phrase “Throw in the towel“. When you throw in the towel you’re telling everyone “I quit. I give up. I’ve been defeated. I cannot continue”. The Christian life is the greatest life there is! I tell people “my WORST day as a saved man is far better than my BEST day as a lost man” and it is. Yet Scripture teaches that as Christians we are in a fight. We are fighting the world, the flesh & the Devil.
While in this battle you may feel overwhelmed and defeated by doubt and discouragement. You may feel like “throwing in the towel”; but allow me to encourage you to continue on! Philippians 1:6 says, “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” Christian, be confident and continue on, knowing He is working in you!!
“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ”
Philippians 1:6
How did great Christians from Scripture and throughout history continue without throwing in the towel? How can you and I continue? Paul gave us the answer in Acts 26:22 when he simply said “Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day….” Don’t be discouraged. Don’t quit. But continue on daily….with the help of God!
