Purpose of The Bible

What’s the Bible even about? Why is it so special? What could a book supposedly written thousands of years ago possibly do for my life today?”

Have you ever asked or had those thoughts? I did for years. Periodically from childhood on up to my early adult years I remember asking myself those same questions. For 22 years  I never cared for or had any interest or desire to read the Bible. All that changed when I became a Christian at the age of 22.  (See My Story. It was then I began to realize how special, powerful and life changing the Word of God is!

Why do so many people have no interest in the Bible?

I can’t speak for everyone but over the years I’ve realized why I didn’t have any interest in the Bible. I did not believe that the Bible was ReliableRelevant or Relatable.  Because of these same doubts far too many today who, as I was for 22 years, no nothing of the life changing truths found in the Scriptures.

There are many today who know nothing of the power of Gods word. Many are like I was, they have never read or heard the Bible preached or explained before. Sadly others are exposed to the Bible often yet because of their unbelief they also no nothing of its power.

Let’s look to the Bible itself to answer a few crucial questions.

1.. What makes the Bible so special?

The Apostle Paul writes to young Timothy in II Timothy 3:15-17 “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” II Timothy 3:15-17

Above all in this passage we must note from the beginning what makes the Bible different than any other book ever written. Why is the Bible so special? It says of itself that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God“.  This alone is what gives authority to the Scriptures unlike any other book written. Yes, the Bible is special and unlike any piece of literature in the world. For its author is God Himself.

The Bible says of God that HE CANNOT LIE (Titus 1:2) and that HE CANNOT CHANGE (Malachi 3:6). Therefore His Word, the Bible, CAN ALWAYS BE TRUSTED and WILL NEVER CHANGE.

2. How did we get the Bible?

I Peter 1:21 tells us “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”
In other words men did not simply “come up with” what to write. Through the Holy Spirit God inspired men to write the 66 books of the Bible we have today. (There are 39 books in the Old Testament & 27 books in the New Testament.)

3. How does the Bible apply to our lives?

Read  II Timothy 3:15-17 again.

Focus on the 5 DISTINCT WORKS of the Word of God. We learn here the PURPOSE of the Bible and HOW it applies to each of our lives.

“15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to 1)make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for 2) doctrine, for 3) reproof, for 4)correction, for 5)instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

So what does that mean? Why is the Bible so important?   How does it apply to my life?

Being the inspired Word of God the Bible is profitable  because is teaches us ALL we need to know in life.
1.Salvation. This is the most important subject in the Bible! This is the whole reason Jesus Christ came to earth! He came to die in mine and your place on the cross to pay our sin debt. We learn from Scripture how we can be “saved” and know we have a home in Heaven when we die and a relationship with God while we are here on earth. (If you died today do you know that you’d go to Heaven? You can know! Feel free to email me with any questions you may have.).
2Doctrine – Tells us what is right in life. What we need to follow after.
3. Reproof – Tells us what’s wrong in life. What we need to flee.
4. Correction  – Tells us how to get right in life when we are wrong.
 5. Instruction in righteousness – Tells us how to stay right after we have been corrected.

Simply put the Bible is every man, woman, boy and girls instruction book for life!  In a world where beliefs and opinions change almost daily Gods Word stays the same. It is our “fixed point of reference” in an ever changing world.

My original doubts regarding the Bible are gone. I can now tell you with the utmost confidence that the Bible is RELIABLE, RELEVANT and RELATABLE  to you and every person!
